Morning: Border Crossing & Boat Departure

Meet your guide at the Lao immigration office after crossing the border from Thailand into Houayxay.

After a short transfer to the pier, board the traditional slow boat at approximately 9:30 AM and settle into your seat for the unforgettable Mekong journey ahead.

As the boat leaves Houayxay behind, the atmosphere quickly shifts into the calm rhythm of river life. Wooden fishing boats drift silently across the water while jungle-covered mountains rise dramatically on both sides of the river.

Afternoon: Mekong River Cruise & Village Visit

Enjoy a freshly prepared traditional Lao lunch onboard while cruising downstream through some of northern Laos’ most untouched landscapes.

Along the way, stop at a remote Khmu or Hmong riverside village inaccessible by road. Here, observe traditional wooden homes, children playing along the riverbanks, and local weaving or farming activities that have changed little over generations.

Your guide will explain the customs, traditions, and lifestyles of the ethnic communities living along the Mekong.

Evening: Arrival in Pak Beng

Arrive in the quiet riverside town of Pak Beng shortly before sunset.

Check into a comfortable guesthouse or riverside lodge overlooking the Mekong River. The evening is free to relax, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, or stroll through the small market street where hill tribe traders often gather.

The peaceful atmosphere of Pak Beng — with its glowing river sunsets and slow pace of life — offers a perfect overnight stop between the two cruising days.

Morning: Departure from Pak Beng

After breakfast at your lodge, return to the pier for an 8:00 AM departure.

The second day of the cruise offers even more spectacular scenery as the Mekong narrows between forested mountains and dramatic limestone cliffs.

Mid-Morning: Ban Baw Village

Stop at Ban Baw, a traditional riverside village famous for producing Lao Lao, the local rice whisky distilled using centuries-old techniques.

Watch villagers demonstrate the distillation process and explore workshops where handwoven textiles and bamboo crafts are produced using traditional methods.

Lunch: Relaxing Mekong Cruise

Continue cruising downstream while enjoying lunch onboard. Spend time relaxing on deck, photographing the scenery, or simply watching everyday river life unfold around you.

Water buffalo cool themselves in the shallows, fishermen cast nets from narrow boats, and small villages appear and disappear along the jungle shoreline.

Afternoon: Pak Ou Caves

Visit the sacred Pak Ou Caves, one of Laos’ most spiritually important pilgrimage sites.

Set dramatically at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers, the caves contain thousands of Buddha statues placed by devotees over many centuries. The atmosphere inside the caves is peaceful and mysterious, illuminated by natural light filtering through the limestone openings.

Late Afternoon: Arrival in Luang Prabang

Continue the final stretch of the journey toward Luang Prabang, arriving at the pier around 5:00 PM.

Upon arrival, transfer comfortably to your hotel and enjoy your first evening in one of Asia’s most charming heritage cities.
